Port-of-Spain,Apr 10: Workers of Indian origin at the Caroni sugar mills in Trinidad and Tobago are up in arms against the decision of the government to retrench them and utilise their fields for commercial purposes. "The fertile lands of Caroni must not be buried under concrete. The land should be distributed on agreed terms to those workers with the agricultural expertise to grow crops," Satynarayan Maharaj, General Secretary of the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha of Trinidad and Tobago, said.

Accusing the government of "dividing the nation," the Mahasabha, which is the largest Hindu body on the islands, alleged "the total retrenchment of all Caroni workers is to shock them into dependent political subservience."
A great number of workers on the islands are of Indian origin, and the Mahasabha insists they hold a close affinity to the island. Bureau Report
