Ahmedabad, Oct 13: A division bench of the Gujarat High Court today took record of the affidavit filed by the state police in connection with providing protection to crucial witnesses in the Best Bakery massacre case.
In an oral observation, the division bench comprising Justice D K Trivedi and Justice M B Shah told the Vadodara police to put on record the observations or order passed by the apex court on October 9 regarding the earlier petition filed by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), seeking protection to witnesses in Gujarat.
The bench also 'approved' that Vadodara police had arranged to provide protection to several witnesses in the city while Gujarat police had informed senior officials across the state to provide protection to other witnesses residing in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
The bench also suggested that police checkposts could be constructed at all sensitive localities in Vadodara city to prevent any untoward incident.
Further hearing in the matter has been slated for December 1.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), Vadodara K Kumarswamy had filed the affidavit in Gujarat High Court and said that out of the 16 eye-witnesses, who were named for police protection, five in Vadodara had refused it.
The affidavit also stated that crucial eyewitness Zahira Shaikh and three of her relatives would also be provided police cover in Mumbai while five in Uttar Pradesh and one in Bihar would also be taken care of.
