Liverpool, Sept 21: Liverpool kept in touch with new English premier league leaders Chelsea thanks to a 2-1 victory over Leicester City.

Liverpool, playing in front of their own crowd, on Saturday (September 20) at Anfield, did not miss Czech injured striker Milan Baros as the England pair Michael Owen and Emile Heskey gave them the points after weathering a late rally from the visitors. Owen notched his sixth league goal of the season when he converted a 20th minute penalty after Gerry Taggart tripped Czech midfielder Vladimir Smicer. Leicester City keeper Ian Walker did well to defy Australia's Harry Kewell effort later in the first half. Heskey diverted a cross from Senegal winger El Hadji Diouf against his old club to make it 2-0 for Liverpool, half an hour after the break. Marcus Bent smashed one home from Leicester City in the last minute, but the goal came too late to save his side. The 2-1 victory left Liverpool in sixth place, only two points behind new leaders Chelsea, with Leicester 13th in the standings.

Manchester United meet Arsenal on Sunday (September 20) with both teams eying their chances to go top of the English premier league.
