Johannesburg, Dec 07: The Kruger National Park in South Africa, one of the world`s biggest wildlife treasures, hosted a record number of visitors for Wednesday`s solar eclipse.
Preliminary figures showed that 10,659 people were issued day permits Wednesday to view the last total solar eclipse for 28 years.
Its northern camps proved an excellent vantage point for many as the moon passed between the sun and the earth at 8:20am local time, plunging parts of the park into total darkness for more than a minute.
A further 8,000 visitors including astronomers, mathematicians and ``shadow chasers`` spent the night in park in the northern reaches of the country, a spokesman for the parks authority said.
