New Delhi, Oct 15: World Bank today approved a USD 240
million loan for Allahabad Bypass project, which is
part of government's ambitious National Highway Development
project.
This is the third World Bank loan to support government
of India's NHDP, which aims to upgrade the 6,000 km Golden
Quadrilateral linking Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata by
the end of 2005.
The 84.7 km Allahabad Bypass is the last remaining section of the golden quadrilateral.
"The existing National Highway runs through the historical city of Allahabad. The bypass is designed to divert traffic out of the city. Thus the city will benefit from reduction of traffic congestion, accidents and motor vehicle pollution," World Bank's Task Manager Zhi Liu said in a statement here.
The funding of the project is part of World Bank country assistance strategy which strives to reduce infrastructure bottlenecks and promotes economic growth.
