Chennai, Sept 29: The British High Commissioner in India, Rob Young, today promised to 'examine seriously' the plea of the Tamil Nadu chief minister, Jayalalithaa, to give financial assistance through the Department For International Development (DFID), as is being to four other states in the country now. This promise was extended when young, along with the Deputy High Commissioner for South India, Stuart Innes, called on Jayalalithaa at the secretariat, an official press release said here.

She also asked for British assistance for putting up tenements to those living on the banks of rivers and rivulets meandering through the city besides cleansing them of the dirt. The British official promised to seriously consider this demand also.

Young also promised to consider her plea for financial assistance to teach English 'without mistakes and with proper pronounciation' in schools and colleges in the state, the release added.
