Los Angeles, Nov 23: Actress Frances Bay, who has played grandmothers and other elderly women in scores of movies and TV shows, was in critical condition after surgery to amputate part of her right leg, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The 83-year-old actress, who portrayed Adam Sandler's grandmother in "Happy Gilmore," was struck by a car on Thursday in Glendale, California.
She underwent surgery on Thursday night at Los Angeles county-USC Medical Centre where doctors amputated her right leg below the knee, said hospital spokeswoman Adelaida De La Cerda.

Bay broke both her legs and suffered a head injury, multiple abrasions and a possible broken arm in Thursday's accident, De La Cerda said yesterday.

"We're getting inundated with people coming in to visit and we need to curtail that," De La Cerda said, adding only immediate family members would be allowed to visit the popular actress, who was hospitalised in an intensive care ward.

Bay has appeared in dozens of TV shows, including a memorable recurring role on "Seinfeld" as the elderly lady mugged by Jerry Seinfeld in a fight over a rye.

She has appeared in more than 50 movies, including last year's "The Wedding Planner" with Jennifer Lopez. Others include "Twins" with Arnold Schwarzenegger, "Inspector Gadget" with Matthew Broderick and "Big Top Pee-Wee" with Paul Reubens.
