Silicon Valley, Feb 27: In a trial closely watched by electronic industry, a US jury found that computer giant IBM Corp, accused of using cancer-causing chemicals in its disk-drive factories, was not responsible for two of its former employees having the disease. After two days of deliberation, a Santa Clara jury of 11 women and one man in California unanimously cleared the company yesterday of claims that the chemicals used in the factory contributed to the workers' disease.
In a four-month long lawsuit, two retired employees alleged that the chemicals that they worked with in IBM disk drive factory in San Jose contributed to their cancers.
They claimed that IBM knew about the poisoning, hid details of it and let their injuries worsen and cause cancers, said a radio report.
Lawyers for IBM argued that employees wore special protective clothing on the job. Bureau Report
