Lucknow, Feb 05: Proceedings of both the houses of the Uttar Pradesh Legislature were today stalled by the opposition protesting against the abolition of districts and divisions, poor law and order situation and plight of the cane growers in the state. The principal opposition BJP members rushed to the wells of both the Houses raising anti-government slogans. They were demanding withdrawal of a government notification scrapping four divisions and nine districts.

As soon as the Lower House assembled, BJP members rushed to the well carrying placards raising anti-government slogans.

They were also demanding taking up of their notice of adjournment motion on law and order, denotification of districts and problems of sugarcane farmers. BSP members also raised anti-government slogans but did not join the BJP MLAs in the well of the House.
When the opposition members refused to accept Speaker Kesharinath Tripathi's suggestion to continue with the question hour, he adjourned the House till 12:20 pm. Later the House was adjourned till 1 pm, then 2 pm.

The BJP leaders, later, told reporters that if their motion of adjournment was not taken up, they would not allow the house to function.

In the legislative council too, BJP members rushed to the well of the House shouting slogans and demanding withdrawal of the notification on districts.

Despite repeated reminders by officiating chairperson Manvedra Singh, they continued with their protest and hindered the working of the House for an hour.
The BJP members later announced a walkout for the entire day.

Later, BSP members raised the issue of the rape of a schoolgirl allegedly by a police officer in Pratapgarh. Raising the issue under Rule 105, the BSP MLCs raised anti-government slogans and demanded adjournment of the house to discuss the issue. When the permission was not granted, they walked out of the house. But the officiating chairperon directed the government to get the matter investigated and inform the House.
Leader of the House Bhagwati Singh said the police officer was arrested on February 2 while the victim's family members denied the incident.
The BJP group, meanwhile, was upbeat as former chief minister Kalyan Singh, who recently re-joined the party, is expected to join the proceedings of the House in the evening. Singh is being brought to the state capital this afternoon by party's state unit president Vinay Katiyar.

Singh represents the Atrauli seat in the assembly.
