New Delhi, Oct 30: Veteran freedom fighter and Congress leader Subhadra Joshi, who was a member of the first Lok Sabha, died here today after a prolonged illness, party sources said. She was 84.
Joshi, who actively participated in the Quit India movement, had championed the cause of communal harmony and had founded the Quami Ekta Trust.
A four time MP and former president of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, her body was kept in the DPCC office for people to pay their last respects.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi visited the office and offered floral tributes to the departed leader.
In her condolence message, she hailed the "significant contribution" made by the departed leader in the passage of Hindu Marriage Act, nationalisation of banks and abolition of privy purses.
"In her passing, the country has lost an outstanding social worker," Gandhi said.
Joshi's body was later cremated at Nigambodh Ghat where several political leaders including Ahmed Patel, Motilal Vora, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and members of her cabinet, former MP Vishwa Bandhu Gupta were present.
