Rampur, UP, Feb 29: The BJP today claimed an increase in Muslim support to the party, attributing the swing to the ''overall social and economic development carried out by the NDA government at the Centre''. ''The performance of the NDA government has helped in washing away the 'secular opium effect of the congress' from the minds of minorities,'' Bharatiya Janta Party General Secretary Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told a string of public meetings in the Muslim-dominated parliamentary constituency of Rampur.
Naqvi said for decades the Congress Party ''in the garb of secularism'' had ''misled'' minorities using them as vote bank.''now the scene has changed and the Muslims knew it well that BJP is their sympathiser and friend,'' he said.

The BJP leader said the Congress had reached a stage where its minority vote had turned into a ''bankrupt bank''. Muslims were now an ''awakened'' lot and had started questioning why the Congress did not allow minorities to grow in the area of social, economic and educational field for the last fifty years, he claimed. He said the coming Lok Sabha polls will witness a historic change in the voting pattern of minorities.
He said the BJP would organise many more minority development rallies and conferences throughout the country to spread the message of harmony, peace and development. These rallies will be attended by the senior BJP leaders, he said.
Naqvi was first elected from the Rampur Parliamentary constituency and was made the Union Minister of Information and broadcasting. He, however, lost elections last time.
