Islamabad, Aug 31: In the first ever admission of the presence of Taliban militants in Baluchistan, Pakistani authorities said they arrested 18 of them from their hideout in the southwestern part of the province bordering Afghanistan.
A government statement said the militants were arrested during a raid conducted last night during which large number of weapons, ammunition and wireless sets were recovered.
"It is believed those arrested belonged to a Taliban group involved in several attacks on the Pak-Afghan border recently and were planning some new attacks,” the statement said.
The arrested were being interrogated and further investigation was in progress, it said.
The arrest follows a surge in violence against aid workers, soldiers and government targets in Afghanistan for which the resurgent Taliban fighters are believed to be responsible.
