Beijing, Oct 28: China said today it had authorised its ambassador to Washington to attend the funeral of Madame Chiang Kai-Shek, but it wasn't clear whether an envoy of the government that overthrew her husband would be welcome. The announcement reflected the Communist government's complicated relationship with Chiang, the widow of former nationalist leader Gen. Chiang Kai-Shek.
The Communists defeated Chiang's government in 1949 in a civil war, forcing it to retreat to Taiwan. But Beijing expressed "deep condolences" after Madame Chiang's death last week, calling her a patriot and noting her role in opposing invading Japanese forces during World War II.
Ambassador Yang Jiechi was authorised by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference to attend Madame Chiang's funeral, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue said.
Madame Chiang, also known as Soong May-Ling, died in New York at age 105.
