Patna, Feb 25: Bihar is likely to be left with only one government medical college with the executive committee of the Medical Council of India (MCI) recommending de-recognition of five other state-run medical institutes in the state. The recommendation was made at the body's meeting in New Delhi earlier this month after inspection of five medical colleges by a three-member MCI team in December last year, council's executive committee member from the state Ajay Kumar said here.

The colleges facing de-recognition are: Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), which incidentally is celebrating its 79th foundation day today, Nalanda Medical College and Hospital, Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital, Srikrishna Medical College and Hospital, Muzaffarpur and Jayaprakash Narayan Medical College and Hospital, Bhagalpur Kumar said all these institutes were on notice for the last four to six years for glaring deficiencies which they failed to improve resulting in the MCI executive committee "being forced to take the unfortunate decision" keeping in mind the interests of the students and patients.

He said the executive body's recommendation will be placed before the general body of the MCI in its next meeting scheduled in March.

If the general body of the MCI ratifies the decision, the state would be left with only one government medical college Anugrah Narain Medical College and Hospital at Gaya and two private medical colleges---Mata Gujri Memorial Medical College in Kishanganj and Katihar Medical College. Bureau Report
