Dallas, Oct 21: Former Indianapolis 500 winner Kenny Brack has improved to a satisfactory condition following his 220mph crash.
The Swede has had two operations to repair a spinal fracture and three damaged vertebrae suffered in the crash in the Texas 500 on 12 October.
Brack is to be transferred from Dallas' Parkland Memorial Hospital to Indianapolis for rehabilitation.
Brack has been visited in hospital by former Indy winners Johnny Rutherford and Mario Andretti.
"Johnny was explaining how tough it was to have a broken sternum when he had a crash many years ago," Brack said in a statement released by his Rahal team.
"He was making me laugh, and that hurt a lot. So he had to stop telling funny stories."
Brack's accident happened when his car spun out of control after contact with Tomas Scheckter's car in the closing laps of the race at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.
The 37-year-old became Indy Racing League champion in 1998 and won the Indy 500, a year later.
