Imphal, June 08: A bronze statue of noted Manipuri playwright Arambam Samarendra was today installed at Khurai Salanthong area in Imphal East district of Manipur. A spokesman of the Arambam Samarendra Trust told reporters the trust would also organise a function on Tuesday to commemorate the work and other writings of the playwright.

Samarendra who had received national awards was gunned down by two unidentified persons on June 10, 2000 while attending a seminar at Salanthong area near here, he said.

Samarendra's plays, poems, novels and other writings reflected the oppression of women, social evils and lack of unity among people in the Manipur society, the spokesman said.
