Vietnam Airlines on Monday signed an agreement to buy four Boeing 777 jetliners, marking the first major business transaction between Vietnam and the United States since both countries signed a landmark trade deal last year.
The deal for four Boeing 777-200ers, valued at about $ 680 million at list prices, is a boon to Boeing Co, whose commercial airplanes division is struggling in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist hijacking attacks. The 777-200er, an extended-range version of Boeing's wide body twinjet, carries 301 passengers in a typical three-class configuration and can fly 14,320 kms. That allows it to fly nonstop between Vietnam and Europe or North America.
The deal was announced at a commerce department signing ceremony in Washington, DC.
Tuesday’s announcement reflects the beginning of a new trading era between Vietnam and the United States and is a solid foundation for US to build our relationships, Deputy Prime Minister H E Nguyen Tan Dung said in a statement. The United States and Vietnam had no formal relations in the two decades following the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. The trade deal, signed in July 2000 and ratified by Congress last month, completes a reconciliation process that began with the lifting of a US trade embargo in 1994.
