Beijing, June 05: Ahead of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's visit, China has suggested that the vexed Sino-Indian border issue can be resolved through consultations on equal footing, mutual understanding, accommodation and mutual adjustment. The issue figured during the meeting between Vajpayee and Chinese Presient Hu Jintao in St Petersberg in Russia last week.
"The two countries should proceed from the friendship between them and properly handle it (border issue), following the principles of consultations on equal footing, mutual understanding and accommodation and mutual adjustment," Hu told Vajpayee, according to Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Zhang Qiyue today.
Qiyue said that Hu told Vajpayee that China wanted to strengthen cooperation with India in all areas and was looking forward to Vajpayee's visit, probably from June 22 to June 26.
During the meeting, Hu told Vajpayee that the new Chinese leadership attaches great importance to relations with India and would like to work with India to greatly strengthen co-operation in all areas and bring bilateral constructive and co-operative partnership to a new level.
China hailed Hu's maiden tour abroad as Preisdent as "highly successful" during which he "cemented" Beijing's ties with the developed and the developing world and one which "yielded very important results."
