Washington, Sept 06: Of the total 1,064,318 legal immigrants to United States in fiscal year 2001, 70,290 people were from India, official figures said.
Five countries -- Mexico, India, China, Philippines and Vietnam accounted for 40 per cent of the legal immigrants, the US Immigration and Naturalisation Service (ins) said adding that people from Mexico figured 206,426, India 70,290, China 56,426, Philippines 53,154, and Vietnam 35,531. The total includes new arrivals to the US who obtained immigrant visas abroad through the Department of State, and persons who were already living here who became permanent residents by applying for adjustment of status with the ins.
Total 411,059 people obtained visas from the Department of State while 653,259 were granted permanent resident status by the INS.
The major categories of immigrants were: immediate relatives of US citizens (443,964), family preferences (232,143), employment preferences (179,195), refugee/asylee adjustments (108,506) and diversity program (42,015).
