New Delhi, Dec 25: As a child, Atal Bihari Vajpayee used to steal sweetmeats in the house and elders used to keep them under lock and key because of his sweet-tooth.
This was disclosed by the Prime Minister's sister Vimla Mishra, in a short film on Vajpayee, screened on the occasion of his 79th birthday at a cultural extravaganza at India Gate lawns this evening.
"I used to be given the responsibility of keeping the keys to the room safely so that Atal won't steal it. Yet he managed but I never used to mind", Mishra said about the "naughty" boy Atal.
The film also had the poet-prime minister reciting his own poem, "Gairon ko gale se na lagaa sakoon, itni rukhai na dena (do not give me such harshness that I can't embrace strangers)", poet Vajpayee rendered in the film.
Vajpayee, who was present on the occasion, was wished and garlanded by vice president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson Najma Heptulla.

A host of union ministers were also present. Karan Singh, who contested against Vajpayee from the Lucknow Lok Sabha constituency, also greeted him.

As children performed a dance drama on war and peace, Tanushree Shankar's troupe performed a musical ballet. Noted singers Hari Haran, Abhijeet and Suresh Wadekar also performed.
