Ahmedabad, June 22: A powerful crude bomb exploded on top of the dome of an ancient dargah in Shahpur locality here causing panic in the area even as police is still investigating whether the device was thrown or planted. "Panic gripped the area yesterday prompting people to rush out of the dargah even as the blast, which caused parts of the dome to crumble, was heard for about a kilometre. However, no injuries or casualties were reported," DCP Zone II vikas sahay said today.

The blast caused a crater near the base of the dome leading to some "perplexity" in investigation, he said adding, "if the device was thrown, it should have hit the curved portion of the dome and exploded instantly".

"It is also unclear whether it was planted and if it was, then how did the wick survive the rains and later, who lit the fuse," he said.
The incident pushed police to increase alertness and security owing to the day-long visit of deputy prime minister L K Advani and other leaders to the city yesterday. They rushed to the spot and eased the situation soon, he said.

Police did not recover any shrapnel or splinter like devices but some adhesive tape and wicks was recovered from near dome and these have been sent to the forensic lab, Sahay said.

The blast occurred just before afternoon `namaz' was to be offered at the 400 year-old dargah of Jalaluddin Baba. Incidentally, the state BJP headquarters is barely 50 yards from the dargah.

No arrests have been made as yet, Sahay added.
