Denpasar, July 30: A self-confessed Bali bombmaker
was confronted today with one of his victims -- a 20-year-old
waitress who was scarred for life by the October blasts.
Ni Wayan Suryani, 20 was testifying at the trial of Ali
Imron. He is accused of helping to build one of the bombs
which killed 202 people on the resort island, most of them
western holiday makers.
"I will be deformed for as long as I live because of
burns," she testified.
The wounds were not visible but Suryani said her head,
face, hand, and back were all injured during the attack, which
left her in hospital for one month and one day.
"I'm still not fully recovered and continue to undergo
treatment," she said, as Imron watched calmly.
Imron, 33, is the fourth key Bali bombing suspect to be tried and the only one to express remorse.
Imron, who before his trial admitted helping to assemble one of the bombs, faces a possible firing squad if found guilty of terrorism charges.
Police say the al Qaeda-linked Jemaah Islamiyah organization staged the bombing of two crowded nightspots to avenge western oppression of Muslims in Afghanistan and elsewhere.
The indictment says Imron and 10 other suspects planned and prepared the attack between August and October last year.
Imron is accused of helping a fugitive Malaysian called Dr. Azahari to build the sari club bomb from chemicals and TNT placed inside plastic boxes in a van they parked outside the club.
