Sept 02: Top seed Serena Williams raced into the quarter-finals of the US Open, thrashing Daja Bedanova of the Czech Republic 6-1 6-1.

Persistent rain in New York meant that play started nearly seven hours late but Williams made up for lost time by securing her place in the last eight in just 41 minutes. The American broke in the first game and then broke twice more to clinch the first set in just 18 minutes.

Bedanova, seeded 20, did try to take the game to her opponent but was simply outpowered by Williams. The reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion smashed three aces in a row in her first service game of each set.

"I have really been working hard on my serve," Williams said.

"Once I serve well my whole game goes up. I feel a little better on my serve. I've just improved."

Serena, champion in New York in 1999, pounded 35 straight winners past the willowy Bedanova and never faced a break point during the match.
The Czech's nerves were apparent as she double-faulted on each of the three break points on which she conceded serve. Bureau Report
