Srinagar, Sept 16: Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire in Kashmir on Monday, coinciding with the start of voting in the first phase of elections Kashmir, police said.
The exchange of artillery and heavy machinegun fire occurred in southern Poonch district, bordering Pakistan-administered Kashmir, a police spokesman said.

"Pakistani troops opened fire from across the Line of Control (LoC) without any provocation at 8:30 am," a police spokesman said.

The spokesman said Indian troops returned fire and that intermittent firing was continuing. No casualties on the Indian side had been reported.
