Agartala, Aug 16: Normal life in Tripura was affected today as shops downed their shutters, markets were closed and vehicles remained off the roads to mark the dawn-to-dusk bandh called by major political parties to protest against the killing of 30 people on the eve of Independence Day. Schools and colleges also did not register any turnout.
Police said no untoward incident was reported from any part of the state.
The ruling Left Front called the bandh to press for five-point charter of demands, including deployment of Army in disturbed areas and increase in BSF strength along the 856 km long porous Indo-Bangla border.
The Opposition Congress called the bandh against the Left Front's alleged failure to provide security to the common people and collapse of law and order.
Thirty people, including 12 women and nine children, were killed at Totabari and Baralunga under Teliamura police station of west Tripura district on August 14 night in separate attacks by the banned ATTF insurgents. The 11 injured in the attacks included five women and four children.
Security forces have been posted at all the vulnerable areas to prevent any untoward incident, police said and added massive combing operation was still on in the areas where the massacre took place.
