Moscow, Aug 10: Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov slammed Georgia's stance toward terrorism in telephone talks with US counterpart Colin Powell, Russia's foreign ministry said in a statement published today.

"The recent events in that region once again show that Georgian leadership's actual actions differ considerably from their declarations regarding combatting terrorism," the statement read. Tensions have soared recently between Russia and Georgia, engaged in a bitter spat over what Moscow claims is Tbilisi's inability to crack down on alleged Chechen rebels based in Georgia's lawless Pankisi Gorge.

Moscow accuses Tbilisi of doing nothing to prevent Chechen rebels and weapons moving through Georgia and has threatened to launch a military strike against fighters sheltering in the Pankisi gorge, bordering Chechnya.

The recent murder of Russian Colonel Igor Zaitsev, whose body was found on the outskirts of Tbilisi, prompted more outrage here. A spokesman for the Russian foreign ministry accused the Georgian authorities of being responsible for Zaitsev's death by allowing "terrorists" to go free.
