New Delhi, July 03: Weather officials today said monsoon might finally hit the city and nearby areas on "5th or 6th" of this month to offer Delhiites the much-awaited respite from sweltering heat wave conditions.
"Conditions are becoming favourable for monsoon onset over Delhi and nearby areas," Dr H R Hatwar of the Indian Meteorological Department said here
"Monsoon trough is building up along the Gangetic plains which is a good news for the advance of monsoon over Delhi and eastern Uttar Pradesh," he said. “In another positive indication, easterlys are also building up over the area", Hatwar said. Yesterday the easterlys were blowing at a low level of about one km height but today these strengthened and blew upto five kms, he said.
Hatwar said monsoon onset over Delhi till 6th July is considered as "nearly normal" and beyond that it is called a "late onset". Monsoon is still in a "strong position" with clouding seen over the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea, he said.
"Good" amount of rainfall, meanwhile, has been recorded along the West Coast, Gujarat, and parts of Maharashtra. Moderate rains were reported in Orissa, Bihar and parts of Madhya Pradesh, he said. Bureau Report
