Srinagar, Aug 26: Opposition National Conference today raked up the issue of restoration of autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir on the eve of Prime Minister A B Vajpayee's visit to the state in connection with the two-day meeting of the inter-state council. NC demands that Vajpayee and other members of the inter-state council who are meeting tomorrow must take urgent steps to restore the eroded autonomy of Jammu and Kashmir, NC general secretary, Sheikh Nazir Ahmad said while addressing a meeting of party activists..

Autonomy has been guaranteed to Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution which was later reconfirmed by Parliament in the shape of Delhi agreement, the veteran NC leader said.

He accused successive Central governments of eroding the autonomy of the state saying that Centre made unnecessary and unconstitutional interventions and made this autonomy "hollow and without substance."
Whatever has been seen during the last 14 years can directly be ascribed to these "uncalled for and ill-conceived" measures, he said adding it was painful that the brunt of these unconstitutional interferences has to be borne by the innocent people of the state.

Sheikh said that peace and order in the state can never be restored fully until people of the state do not feel emotional satisfaction and until the autonomy resolution passed by the state legislature is not implemented in letter and spirit.
In a resolution passed at the meeting which was held at NC headquarters, the party demanded implementation of Sarkaria Commission.
