Apr 08: Renault driver Fernando Alonso has been released from hospital with no injuries after a massive crash during the Brazilian Grand Prix. The Spaniard was taken in for observation after crashing at close to 180mph into debris left by an accident involving Jaguar driver Mark Webber.

The incident led officials to stop the race.

Alonso initially sat down beside the track before being taken away on a stretcher with his neck in a brace.

He gave a thumbs-up sign as he was carried away.
Alonso was placed under observation for 12 hours, but was released unhurt.

A team spokeswoman said on Monday: "He has been released from hospital and will fly home today. He has a little bruising on his knee, but is otherwise OK."

The Spaniard said: "I thought my race was going pretty well.

"But then I came round the final corner to find debris everywhere and I had nowhere to go. I think I hit a wheel, and the next thing I knew I was headed for the barriers."

Alonso was classified third on F1's countback rule.

Webber was not hurt and was not sure why he spun and crashed into the wall on the pit straight.
"Given the unforgiving nature of this circuit combined with the heavy fuel load I was carrying, I suspect the tyres were struggling with grip," the Australian said.

Webber was one of many drivers to crash on the treacherous surface - including world champion Michael Schumacher, who has now made mistakes in the first three races of the year.
