Moscow, Apr 10: India and Russia today called for early restoration of the UN role in post-war Iraq and agreed to consolidate their interaction within the framework of the world body. Russia and India "underscored the need for the restoration of the leading role of the United Nations" in the post-war Iraq, Russian foreign ministry said at the end of Indian ambassador Krishnan Raghunath's meeting with deputy foreign minister Yuri Fedotov.
At their meeting, Raghunath and Fedotov focused on the situation in Iraq and its fallout. They also agreed for close Indo-Russian interaction in the United Nations.
Fedotov is Russia's pointman on Iraq and this was his second meeting within a week with the Indian ambassador as part of the intensification of Moscow's diplomatic interaction on Iraq with New Delhi and Beijing.
Last week Fedotov met Raghunath on the eve of his China visit on April 3 and it is believed that at his latest meeting with the Indian ambassador he briefed him on his talks in Beijing.
