Aizawl, Nov 18: The campaigning for the November 20 election to the 40-member Mizoram Assembly came to an end today. The campaigning, mostly confined to public meetings, followed by rock concerts, with major political parties avoiding hectic door-to-door canvassing to woo the electorate, came to end at 1600 hours today.
National leaders like Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu and other senior politicians and union ministers visited the state to campaign for their parties.
With no major issues except for the controversy over the voting rights of the Bru tribals getting highlighted, campaigning was low-key and confined to charges and counter-charges on corruption and development.
Top leaders like Chief Minister Zoramthanga, former chief minister and Pradesh Congress Committe (PCC) chief Lal Thanhawla and other leaders like Mizoram People's Conference (MPC) chief and opposition leader Lalhmingthanga and Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) president Lalduhawma were mostly confined to their respective constituencies.
Zoramthanga, Lal Thanhawla and Lalduhawma are contesting from two constituencies each. Zoramthanga is contesting from Champhai and Kolasib, while Lal Thanhawla is trying his luck from Serchhip and is pitted against Zoramthanga in Champhai.
Lalduhawma is contesting from Ratu and Aizawl South-II constituencies while his poll ally MPC chief Lalhmingthanga is seeking election from Lunglei south constituency.
