Coimbatore, Oct 27: The Tamil Nadu government will stand to lose heavily if the liquor retail trade was taken over by it, Tamil Nadu Wine Merchants Association said here last night.
As a wholesaler, the government was getting crores of Rupees, without zero investment, which it would lose by taking over the retail liquor trade, the association vice-president, B G Murugesh, told reporters here.
Refusing to comment on the ordinance saying it was a policy matter, Murugesh said that the private retailers had developed the trade in the state, which stood third in the country in the business, with their 'total involvement which TASMAC and cooperatives would lack'.
