Srinagar, Oct 13: Matriculation examination, currently being held across Kashmir valley, could not be held in border town of Gurez in Baramulla district today following intense Pakistani shelling, official sources said. Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked and indiscriminate shelling in the sector this morning causing panic among the people living in the villages located close to the line of control, the sources said. They said the shelling forced people to take shelter in the underground bunkers build by the government for their safety. People did not venture out as the shelling continued throughout the day, disrupting normal life, the sources said, adding a number of shells hit the Gurez township but there were no immediate report of any casualty from anywhere in the sector. As the students and examiners did not turn up at the examination halls, the exams could not be held today and is expected to take place only in the end, the sources said.
They said troops guarding the border fired in retaliation to silence Pakistani guns and also intensified vigil to foil any possible infiltration attempt by Pakistan-trained militants.
