JKLF, breakaway Hurriyat activists detained
Srinagar, Sept 26: Nearly 55 activists of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front were taken into preventive custody today as they marched towards the United Nations Military Observers Group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) office here to present a memorandum urging them to monitor the human rights situation in the state.
Srinagar, Sept 26: Nearly 55 activists of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front were taken into preventive custody today as they marched towards the United Nations Military Observers Group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) office here to present a memorandum urging them to monitor the human rights situation in the state.
Led by Ghulam Mohammad Hubby, activists of Syed Ali Shah Geelani headed Hurriyat Conference made a dramatic appearance at Abi Guzar on Residency Road and marched towards UNMOGIP but were taken into custody by the police near Maulana Azad Road in the city, official sources said.
Nearly 45 activists were detained when they tried to break the police cordon and march towards the UNMOGIP office, the sources said.
The detainees include four women activists of the Muslim Khawateen Markez, a constituent of Geelani faction of the breakaway Hurriyat group. Besides Hubby, Firdous Ahmad Shah, Shafi Lone and Yasmeen were among those detained, the sources said.
A eight member JKLF delegation led by vice-chairman Javid Ahmad Mir on way to Tral township of south Kashmir were intercepted by police at UNMOGIP office and taken into custody, the sources said. Bureau Report
