Mumbai, Sept 10: Intelligence agencies have warned that terrorist outfits may strike in the country's commercial capital or elsewhere in the country tomorrow, coinciding with
the anniversary of September 11 attack in the United States, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said today.
"We have received intelligence reports that terrorist outfits are planning to carry out subversive activities in Mumbai or elsewhere in the country coinciding with the September 11 anniversary of USA strike", Bhujbal, who also holds home portfolio, told a press conference.
Keeping in view the intelligence feedback, Chief Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has put the state police force on high alert to avoid any untoward incident, Bhujbal said. Shinde called a high-level meeting to take stock of the situation and discuss the measures to be taken, he said.
Shinde, who was also present on the occasion said, "The intelligence report is nothing but an alert and there was no need to panic".
The Chief Minister did not reply when asked whether cancellation of Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's visit to Mumbai was linked with the intelligence feedback. "Generally, police maintain a strict vigil on dates like September 11 and December 06 but tomorrow they have been asked to remain vigilant", he added.
The state intelligence agencies along with their Central counterparts were working in tandem and sharing the information gathered, Bhujbal replied to a query.
Asked if any arrest has been made in this connection, the home minister declined to comment.
