Srinagar, July 04: Jammu and Kashmir rural development minister Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed today escaped an assassination bid with minor injuries when militants dressed in army uniform hurled a grenade and opened fire when he was inspecting a school, killing one person and injuring 28 others in Anantnag district.
While Sayeed, a key congress minister in the PDP-led coalition government, suffered splinter injuries in his leg, Ali Mohammad Bhat, headmaster of the Government Middle School Larnoo, was killed, police spokesman said, adding deputy commissioner Anantnag Shalinder Kumar, Superintending Engineer Public Works Department Abdul Qayoom and nine policemen were among the injured.
The attack took place at around 12.45 pm when the minister was inspecting the school in Kokernag, his constituency, 80 kms from here, the spokesman said.
Police and CRPF personnel accompanying the minister retaliated but the militants escaped.
Pro-Pakistan Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen (JuM) claimed that the attack was carried out jointly by its activists and those belonging to Harkat-ul-Jehad-e-Islami (HuJI).
Sayeed`s Public Relations Officer, Mohammad Akbar, assistant information officer of state information department and his three personnel security guards were among the injured, the spokesman said.
