Darwin (Australia), July 19: Australia Test captain Steve Waugh reached another cricket high-water mark when he made a blazing century to become only the second player to hit 31 Test centuries along with Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar. The two cricketing giants stand second only to another Indian great Sunil Gavaskar, who has scored 34 centuries in his Test career.
With his latest century, Waugh also became only the second cricketer to score centuries against all the nine Test-playing nations. He emulated the achievement of South African opener Gary Kirsten in scoring against all-comers.
The 'iceman' has scored 10 centuries against England, seven against the West Indies, Sri Lanka (3), Pakistan (3), New Zealand (2), India (2), South Africa (2), Zimbabwe (1) and now Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Australia tightened the noose around out-gunned Bangladesh in the first Test at Marrara Oval here today.
After the redoubtable 38-year-old Australian skipper scampered for two runs to raise his 100, he promptly declared his team's first innings closed at 407 for seven.
That left Bangladesh with the daunting task of having to score 311 runs against the world's premier bowling attack to avoid yet another innings defeat -- their 19th in 20 Tests.
At the close, Bangladesh were 70 for one with Hannan Sarkar not out 29 and Habibul Bashar on 26.
