Ranchi, Apr 22: The death of a 13-year old boy here on Sunday, spreading a SARS scare in the Jharkhand capital, was due to pneumonia and not due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome, hospital officials said today. The local media had reported that a student, Mohammad Parvez, had died of SARS at the Dr Abdur Razaqque Weavers Hospital (Apollo group) at IRBA near here on Sunday.
The boy, admitted on April 17 night with high fever accompanied with cough, breathing difficulties and intense pain in the lower limbs, had not died of SARS, the hospital officials said in a statement.
On investigation, blood counts were not raised and X-rays showed shadows in both lungs suggesting viral pneumonia, a seasonal episode, it said.
The patient was treated with anti-viral drugs, antibiotics and other supportive measures were taken after keeping him in isolation. "In spite of all measures the patient died on April 20 at 5 am."
"The patient had not travelled outside the country. So suspicion of SARS was unlikely," the statement added.
