Jabalpur, Nov 21: A total of 21 bodies, all of them beyond recognition, were recovered from the charred bus which caught fire after turning upside down near Pahadkheda village about 40 kms from here last evening, a senior police official said today.
The bodies, including that of 11 minors, were taken out with the help of fire brigade personnel and there was no one left inside the bus now, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sudarshan Kumar told reporters here.
Of the 26 injured, condition of five was stated to be critical at the Victoria Medical College hospital here, he said.
However, Additional Superintendent of Police B S Chauhan had said last night that 30 bodies had so far been extricated from the mangled remains of the bus.
Kumar said that the driver of the bus was missing and it was not immediately known if he was also included in the list of deceased or fled from the scene.
However, the owner of the bus was among the injured and was admitted in the hospital, he added.
The mishap occurred when one of the tyres of the private bus on its way to Kundam from Jabalpur burst near Pahadkheda in neighbouring Mandla district and caught fire as two petrol cans and two gas cylinders kept behind the driver's seat exploded soon after the accident. Bureau Report
