Manila, June 12: The severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak is nearing its end but there are no assurances it will not recur later this year, the World Health Organization said today. "In terms of the number of cases, we are seeing the end of the outbreak," said Hitoshi Oshitani, the who's regional adviser on communicable diseases and coordinator for SARS response and preparedness in the Western Pacific region.
In terms of numbers, he said the WHO only monitored seven new cases yesterday - one in China, one in Canada, one in Taiwan and four in the United States.
The disease appears to be already "under control" in China but still "not completely under control" in Taiwan.
"We have to monitor the situation closely," Oshitani told reporters here, noting that the disease reappeared in canada just after authorities there thought it had abated.
