Mumbai, Feb 03: Police have cracked the sensational Ghatkopar quadruple murder case with the arrest of five persons from Kalwa in adjacent thane district and recovery of various weapons used in the ghastly attack.

An old couple and the watchman of a housing society were found murdered on January 19, after a gang of robbers barged into their flat. The couple's son, who was also injured, succumbed to injuries subsequently. Addressing mediapersons here today, Mumbai Police Commissioner, R S Sharma said following the incident, police received a tip-off about a gang hailing from Kalwa whose modus operandi matched the one at Ghatkopar.

In a large-scale operation involving over 100 police personnel, the various hide-outs of the gang were raided before the five were arrested on January 30.

The accused hailed from Sitamarhi, Jalana, Sahebgang and Parbhani districts of the state.

During interrogation, the accused admitted to having selected the house after a careful reconnaissance. The house was zeroed on since it was secluded and close to thick vegetation.
On January 19, the gang visited the spot at around 5 pm and rechecked the location of the house. They scaled the boundary wall of the society at around 2.30 am and fatally assaulted the dozing watchman and dragged his body about 75 meters away. Fearing that the watchman might have blown a whistle, they latched all the neighbouring houses from outside.

They subsequently barged into the house after breaking the door and attacked the old couple and their son.
