Taking the wind out of opposition onslaught on gujarat violence, Government on Thursday announced in the Rajya Sabha that it would support the censure motion in letter and spirit. He assured the Centre would continue to take steps under Article 355 of the Constitution to protect the life and property of the people.
The Opposition, during the debate lashed out at the Vajpayee Government for its failure to maintain communal harmony in Gujarat following Godhra incident and said the entire country was disillusioned with the government`s inaction in curbing violence that threatened the unity and integrity of the country.
Initiating a discussion on the Gujarat issue under Rule 170 which entails voting, senior Congress leader Arjun Singh said, “The entire nation is disillusioned with the government for not containing communal carnage.”
He said that the BJP claimed it was a party with a difference but its government in Gujarat had failed to maintain communal harmony.
Expressing concern over continuing communal violence in the state, Singh said, “The country gave you (BJP) an opportunity to rule but what did you do. There is a lot of difference between what they say and what they do”

The seven-line motion drafted in consultation with all political parties has expressed deep sense of anguish at the persistence of violence in Gujarat for over six weeks leading to loss of lives of a large number of persons and destruction of property worth crores of rupees.

It has also urged the Central government to intervene effectively under article 355 of the constitution to protect the lives and properties of the citizens and to provide effective relief and rehabilitation to victims of violence.
