Mcburney made the 100-metre dash in a 39.97-second brisk walk
at the world Masters Athletics championships yesterday, the
oldest competitor at the games for seniors.
Mcburney came in last but not least, not even breaking a
sweat in the race against four men aged 90 and 91 at Puerto
Rico's Roberto Clemente sports complex in San Juan's Carolina
suburb.
The winner was 91-year-old Mahlo Friedrich of Germany, in 19.24 seconds.
A beekeeper from Quinter, Kansas, Mcburney said he competes "to show people you can still perform at an old age." "I think he's a great inspiration," said his grandson Micah Forman, a 26-year-old nurse from Orlando, Florida.
Mcburney did long-distance running into his 90s but said he's slowed down lately, just walking a bit, and trained for two months for the games.
