New Delhi, Mar 17: Portugal government has sent a Letters Rogatory (LR) to India seeking details about the criminal profile of underworld don Abu Salem, main accused in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blast even as authorities in Lisbon have moved a court for extension of his judicial remand which expires tomorrow. Highly-placed CBI sources told a news agency that a letter rogatory from Portugal had been received by India and was in the process of execution on highest priority as per the law of the country.
Salem, who was arrested on September 18 in Lisbon, is facing charges of forging documents to procure a Portuguese passport. The request from Portugal seeks details about this forgery only as he had procured some documents from India to accomplish his crime, the sources said.
Meanwhile, Lisbon authorities are believed to have moved a court for further remand of Salem. The sources said the agency had learnt informally that request for the judicial custody of Salem had been made to facilitate his stay in the jail pending disposal of the extradition request from India.
