New Delhi, Nov 10: The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) has accused the United States of maintaining a hardline stand on possession of nuclear weapons by the former ignoring its proposal to ink a non-aggression treaty between the two. Washington had showed disregard for the DPRK proposal to conclude a non-aggression treaty aimed at ceasing long-standing hostilities between Pyongyang and Washington which worsened after the recent US demand to scrap the former's nuclear weapons programme, according to the North Korean foreign ministry spokesman.

The Bush administration had ignored North Korea's proposition and was showing no signs of softening its stand, the spokesman said in a statement made available to a news agency. Pyongyang believed that the proposed treaty would be mutually beneficial and guard against use of nuclear weapons against each other, he said.

The US had been threatening to launch preemptive strikes in violation of the basic spirit of nuclear non-proliferation treaty and the best way to ease tensions was through dialogue and negotiations, the spokesman observed. Last month Washington had called for total elimination of North Korea's nuclear weapons programme after it was revealed that Pyongyang had been clandestinely developing nukes.

The US had accused North Korea of violating the 1994 nuclear arms agreement in which the latter agreed to abandon its quest for nuclear weapons in exchange for annual infusions of fuel oil and construction of two light-water nuclear reactors.
