Shillong, May 19: Army authorities today said no encroachment of civilian land took place in the Meghalaya capital for constructing a training centre as reported in a section of media and the land was purchased by them. "The facts are that the land at happy valley locality has been purchased by the army and got demarcated in accordance with the map prepared by the survey of India," an official release said here quoting defence authorities.
Reports in a section of local media suggested the Gorkha Training Centre (GTC) of the army encroached into residential areas at Lapalang.
The reports quoted the area headman as saying the defence personnel encroached the residential premises of the area by putting up flags to mark boundary. "Threatened by the move, we sought the help of local MLA who in turn requested chief minister B B Lapang" the reports quoted the headman as saying.
The release said the boundary was shown 'duly marked' with flags in Lapalang area to the director general of defence estates.
Neither has any encroachment been done nor any construction demolished, it said adding army was always known to proceed with due caution in accordance with law. Bureau Report
