Lagos,Aug 04: Nigeria announced on Saturday a second postponement of its first elections since army rule ended in 1999, dealing a new blow to the country's wobbling democracy. President Olusegun Obasanjo said local elections could not be held on August 10 as scheduled as preparations were not complete.
With a new date yet to be set, the delay could affect more important presidential, national and governorship elections early next year, extending political uncertainty in Africa's most populous country.

Obasanjo said in a monthly national radio talk show that governors responsible for local elections in the country's 36 states had decided the poll would have to be put off for the second time to allow revision of the voters' register.
The polls were originally to have taken place in April, but were put back then for the same reason. Bureau Report
