Coimbatore, Nov 30: A new 2.10 km long, nine bend motor speedway, a combined race and kart track, which met the grade 4 specification of FIA (international motorsports governing body), has come up at Chettipalayam, in the city outskirts.
Named after late S Karivardhan, instrumental in designing the single seater-Formula Maruti racing cars and two-seater Mcdowell 1000, the Go Cart track 'Kari Motor Speedway' forms part of the main circuit and with two different layouts -- 1.3 km long and another approximately 800 metres long.
The tracks have been built to meet the Grade A and B specification of CIK (international ruling body of karting) and the karts that would be used on this circuit were the high speed 2-stroke Rotax Engined Karts, the 100cc Direct Drive and the 2 speed and 6 speed Shifter Karts.
Talking to reporters Thursday, on the eve of the opening of the track, Akbar Ebrahim, chief executive of LG Sports Private Ltd, who are the promoters, said that the final FIA and CIK certifications were underway.
Rental karting also gets a boost as the normal rental karts for the general public were fitted with the corner K80 engines, which were far more powerful than the present 4-stroke 6bhp engines used in various rental tracks.

The track, the second only in the country, after Chennai, has a long 800 metres straight leading onto a tight and heavily banked corner, to make racing exciting and most corners banked to give the drivers the additional thrill and challenge to carry higher entry speeds into the corners, Ebrahim said Thursday night.
