Kathmandu, Oct 09: The Royal Nepal Army killed more than 300 Maoist rebels in its one-and-a-half month operation since the insurgents called off their unilateral ceasefire and is determined to wipe out terrorism from the country, Chief of Army Staff Pyar Jung Thapa said.
Addressing a function of the army staff outside Kathmandu yesterday, Thapa said the Maoists had used the period of ceasefire and talks to recoup their strength.
But the army and other security forces have been continually achieving success in their fight against terrorism, Thapa claimed.
The security forces would succeed in restoring peace and security in the country, provided they get necessary support from all quarters of the society, the Army Chief was quoted as saying by state-run `Rising Nepal' today.
The rebels unilaterally announced a nine-day truce during the Dusshera festival which ends on October 10.
"The responsibility of establishing peace in the country has come on the shoulders of the security forces and they are committed to wipe out all forms of terrorism and terrorist activities for the sake of maintaining peace and security," Thapa said.
