Jerusalem, July 31: Clowns Without Borders have come to put a smile on the faces of all children in the region. Clowns without Borders was founded in Barcelona in July 1993. The idea behind the organisation was that the use of clown and humour in situations of conflict and violence serves as a psychological recourse or support for individuals and communities that suffer some kind of crisis.
It started by Catalan clown Tortell Poltrona in 1993 after a trip to perform in a Croatian refugee camp. An Argentinean clown member of Clowns Without Borders said that making people laugh is a type of medicine: "There are different types of shows and different types of medicine this is one of the medicine, is the laugh in this country.... It is very good." Since 1993, there have been more than 90 expeditions to Zones of Conflict and refugee camps mostly by groups based in Spain, but also by groups based in France, Sweden, Mexico and the United States.
